What insurance(s) do you take?

Self Made Psychology clinicians are in-network providers through Aetna. If you are covered by Aetna, our admin team will verify the details of your coverage, including your current benefits, out-of-pocket costs (copays) and all other relevant details to ensure you have clear and accurate information about your benefits.

Self Made Psychology is an out-of-network for all other insurers. This means that fees are paid by the client directly. We will however, provide you with a monthly superbill that you can submit to your insurance for reimbursement. Depending on your coverage, you may receive a significant reimbursement from your insurer for the fees you paid.

What is my insurance coverage?

If you have out-of-network benefits for behavioral health services, call your insurance company and ask about your deductible. Specifically, you can ask about the reimbursement rate for a licensed psychologist in a 11201 zip code for the following codes as needed, specifying remote appointment:
  • CPT code 90834 (individual therapy, 45-minute session)
  • CPT code 90847 (couples therapy)
  • CPT code 90853 (group)

These clinicians are working under the supervision of a licensed psychologist while they gain hours towards full licensure. If you are working with an LMSW or a Psychology PostDoc, ask if your insurance provider accepts superbills that are co-signed by the provider (LMSW or Postdoctoral Psychologist) and their supervisor (licensed psychologist)

What forms of payment do you accept?

Aetna insured:

For clients covered by Aetna insurance, Self Made Psychology will receive payment directly from Aetna. You may be responsible for a co-payment and/or a deductible. Check with our admin team and/or your insurer to confirm these details

Out-of-pocket:

For clients paying out-of-pocket (non-Aetna insured), all payments will be accepted by credit card only and charged at the end of the monthly billing cycle. Payment information will be obtained during the intake process with the start of treatment.

What happens during the initial 20 minute consultation?

The 20-minute consultation call is a free, no-pressure opportunity to explore whether our practice—and a specific therapist or service—feels like the right fit for you.

During the call, we’ll ask a few brief questions about what you're looking for, what challenges you're facing, and any preferences you have (such as clinician style, scheduling, or specialties).

You’ll also have the chance to ask us questions about our process, fees, or anything else that’s on your mind.

The goal is to ensure you feel informed, supported, and comfortable before scheduling your first session.

If it seems like a good match, we’ll guide you through the next steps to get started. If not, we’re happy to offer referrals to other providers who may be a better fit.

How do I choose the right clinician for me?

Choosing the right therapist is a personal and important decision. We recommend looking at our clinician profiles to learn about their specialties, approaches, and experience.

Think about what feels most important to you—whether it's someone with expertise in a specific issue (like anxiety, trauma, or relationships), a particular therapeutic style, or simply someone whose personality resonates with you.

If you're unsure where to start, we're happy to help. Reach out to us, and our intake coordinator can guide you through the process and match you with a clinician who fits your needs, preferences, and availability.

Your first session is a chance for you and your therapist to get to know each other. You'll talk about what brought you to therapy, your goals, and any concerns or questions you have. Your therapist will ask about your history, current challenges, and what you hope to gain from the process.

They will also share information about how they work and how they will help you reach your goals.
It’s completely normal to feel a bit nervous at first—therapy is a new experience for many people. There's no pressure to share everything right away. The goal of the first session is to start building a safe, collaborative space where you feel heard, respected, and supported.

How do you work with the family system when treating kids and teens?

When working with children and teens, we take a collaborative approach that includes the entire family system. While individual sessions with the child or teen are central to the work, we also recognize that lasting change often involves the family context.

Depending on the situation, we may involve parents or caregivers in various ways—through regular check-ins, parent coaching, or joint sessions. We also help families build communication tools and strategies that support the child’s growth outside of therapy.

Our goal is to empower both the young person and their support system, creating a shared path toward healthier relationships and emotional well-being. We tailor our approach based on the child’s age, developmental stage, and the specific needs of your family.

Can I switch clinicians within the practice if needed?

Yes, absolutely. Finding the right therapeutic fit is essential, and we understand that sometimes it takes a few sessions to know if a connection feels right. If at any point you feel that your therapist isn’t the best match for your needs, we fully support your decision to switch.

You can reach out to our intake coordinator, who will talk with you about what you're looking for and help you transition to another clinician within the practice. Our priority is that you feel comfortable, supported, and confident in your care.
